On December 1, 2018 at approximately 7:40 a.m. an LVMPD traffic officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling recklessly at a high rate of speed in a residential neighborhood. The vehicle stopped in the area of 18th Street and Sunrise Avenue. The officer asked the driver to exit the vehicle. As the suspect exited the vehicle, the officer noticed a bulky item on his waistband. The officer asked about the item and instructed the suspect not to touch it. The suspect continually grabbed at the item despite several verbal commands not to do so. Not knowing what the item was, the officer placed his hands-on the suspect to take him into custody. The suspect then turned around and began fighting with the officer. The officer attempted to control the suspect by deploying his taser. The suspect went to the ground but stood back up and continued to wrestle the officer. The officer drew his firearm and struck the suspect. The suspect was transported to UMC Trauma and declared deceased. This is the 22 nd officer involved shooting of 2018. Per LVMPD policy, the identity of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with any information about this incident is urged to contact the LVMPD Force Investigation Team at 702-828-8452. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 702-385-5555, or on the internet at www.crimestoppersofnv.com.
